North Design Labs, LLC is a full service creative agency, with a very unique structure. We are a network of thousands of professionals assembled specifically for each project. What this means is that you get a tailored team for exactly what your project demands. We are best in class practicing professionals in design, engineering, prototyping, brand strategy, video production, and entrepreneurship. We have invented, patented, designed, manufactured and branded products ranging from cookware to consumer electronics. The most fun are crazy prototypes that we build to see if we just can. Check out a few of them below!
A prototype of an educational game for getting kids past the fourth grade reading slump. The prototype RFID cards interact with the prototype device that interacts with the game the kids are playing–it’s very interactive! There were many other devices, which must remain confidential. You can read more about Mission to Planet 429 here. The Nukotoys product evolved into 2 kids games in the app store, Monsterology and Animal Planet Wildlands. The associated trading cards are also in the Apple store and other retailers.
Fully electric the E-Rod set a new bar for performance and style for electric vehicles. The UQM Powerphase 150kW motor was “overclocked” taking it up to 225kW and producing 660 ft-lb of torque. The vehicle was powered off of custom made 440V A123 battery pack, complete with custom BMS. The car was sponsored by Solidworks, Factory Five, A123, and UQM. It made it’s first debut at SEMA 2009 when it won Best Green Car. It’s next showing was to kick off Solidworks World. A one of a kind the car, with show room tires on it, put up an impressive 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds!
An autonomous drone that delivers a self inflating life vest to a drowning victim. A swimmer wears an arm device with an emergency button. When the button is pressed, a signal is sent to the drone that gives the GPS location of the person. The drone then autolaunches with rockets and bungees. The drone then flies autonomously to the victim releasing a life vest directly over them. Watch the video on Discovery Channel.
A 30 foot tall, 30,000 pound machine that moves up and down and side to side simulating a water slide that the rider programs ahead of time. Built in 5 weeks the simulator was, needless to say, quite an undertaking.
A state-of-the-art fire fighting back pack designed by Scott Summit and 3D printed using SLS and SLA technology. The pack is custom “printed” to the exact dimensions of the user from a laser body scan. The arm mount has an integrated dry chemical fire extinguisher built-in. The head unit has a thermal imaging camera and a micro-projection system that lets the user see in dark and smokey environments along with giving valuable information.
Inspired by the Geckos, Dr. North invented a new material to allow the paddles to create friction and adhesion to vertical surfaces. The paddles themselves were 3D printed using a selective laser sintering technology. While the paddles were the first of their kind, they could only allow a climber to scale surfaces up to 85 degree inclines.
This retrofit created a truck that could lift itself up and over other cars. Not only do the legs give you a birds-eye view, but the omnidirectional driving wheels allow you to rotate and side-shift into any parking spot, even if it’s over another car!
The 6×6 is a six-legged biomimetic all terrain vehicle. Just like an insect this vehicle has six legs and uses an alternating tripod gate. The cromoly chassis was custom designed by Speck Design. The carbon fiber legs were designed by Dr. North and have 150 layers of unidirectional carbon fiber engineered to give the vehicle the right spring in the step! The entire vehicle is battery powered.
